Periodontal Disease's Predisposing Factors

  • poor oral hygiene
  • low compliance with the dentist and inadequate recalls
  • systemic deseases or other psycological and physical conditions that may reduce the body defense mechanism to fight infections
  • malnutrition
  • lack of function of opposing teeth (ex. becouse teeth are missing)
  • smoking
  • tartar
  • caries
  • inadequate dental restorations
  • crowded and malpositioned teeth
  • anatomical conditions that can interfere with plaque control

Carie's Predisposing Factors

  • poor oral hygiene
  • frequent consumption of sugar (liquid or solid) or sour food (ex. orange juice)
  • low calcified enamel with superficial defects
  • exposure of dental roots (the cementum that covers roots is not as hard as enamel, therefore it is easily attacked by acids)
  • crowded and malpositioned teeth
  • fixed orthodontic appliance (provide retentive areas)
  • inadequate dental restorations
  • reduced saliva production (the saliva contains substances able to fight the acidity produced by sugars and remineralize dental surfaces)
  • soft diet
  • lack of function or use of teeth (eliminates effectiveness of natural cleansing)
